The prince and his female companion face harsh desert heat, high winds,  treacherous sands, and together before finally reaching the fabled destination.  Right where the soothsayer said it would be was a beautiful oasis in the heart of the desert.  After refreshing themselves in the shade of the palm trees and cooling themselves and their horses off in the pond, they explored the plant rich area to find the cave they were told of.

It was right where the soothsayer said it would be.  At the center of the oasis sat a cave leading down into the earth flanked by palm trees on each side of the entrance.  It surprised the pair that the rock that made up the cave walls was solid considering all the sand around them.  They traveled down and entered a large chamber.  The light of their torches returned hundreds of golden gleams as the light fell on treasures galore scattered throughout the cavern.  The prince and his servant were overjoyed at this find.  With even a small part of this treasure the king could be saved.  All they had to do was pick out a few things that would be worth the amount of the ransom.

However their joy would be short lived.  A sudden rumble caught them by surprise and threw them off balance.  The prince looked up and could barely make out cracks appearing in the ceiling above them.  A gasp left his throat as a chunks of rock dislodged from the cave and began free falling to the cave floor around him.  His servant was trying to find her footing when a large force hit her from the side and threw her to the floor a few feet away.  A moment later the shaking subsided.  The princes’ servant looked up and saw to her horror that the prince was lying on the ground where she had been a moment before.  He had pushed her out of the way and was badly injured in her place.

Immediately she rushed to his side and found him to be in bad shape.  He was unconscious and bleeding from a head wound.  Without aid he would surely die.  She ripped part of her clothing to use as a makeshift bandage, but she knew it was a superficial fix.  He needed help, and soon.  She immediately thought of their supplies on their horses, but her heart sank when she looked over to see the entrance blocked by large chunks of rock.  She tried to move the rock, but found them to be to heavy.  She cursed their luck.  They’d found what they’d searched for, but now it was all for naught.

as the rumbling subsided, the servant got up and saw the prince was unconcious and injured really badly. She remove parts of her garment and dipped them in water to tend to his wounds. It will take time for rescue to come for them but if will be a matter of time before the prince will die.

She looked through the treasures for anything that might help, or help them escape the now tomb but it was all gold and gems.  A couple of hours passed, but she found nothing that would be of any use.  A small breeze flowed around the cavern, and on it rode what could only be described as a ghostly whisper.  “Would you like some help?” it seemed to say.  The servant girl looked up and around.  Surely she was alone with the prince.  Who could have been speaking.  “Come to me.  Seek me out, and I shall help you.” came the voice again.  She felt compelled; drawn toward the voice.  Could she be going mad with desperation?  She followed the voice cautiously over the mounds of treasure.  Whatever it was said that it could help.  She only had a short amount of light left with her torch.  What did she have to lose?

Her search led her to the other side of the cave and to the bottom of a large pile of golden objects, but she sighed as her hopes diminished with the sight of what she’d been looking for; a gold lamp.  The servant began to cry and wonder, “What good will a simple oil lamp could do?”  It was then that the voice sounded again, and it seemed to be coming directly from said lamp.

"I understand you love this prince very much.  He’s a childhood friend of yours.  And he loves you too.  He even risked his life to save yours, but how far are you willing to go to save his in return?" asked the voice.  It was seemingly flowing around her like a fog.  The servant cried and said she would offer anything to ensure his safety and the wealth he needed.

A pair of golden bracelets appeared in front of her enveloped in a glow that lit up the room brilliantly.  “These mystical bracelets will give you the power to heal your beloved prince, and transport him and the treasure back to his kingdom.  His quest will be fulfilled, but you my dear will pay the price for it.” said the voice.

“Price?” she asked confused.

“Yes.  The price is your freedom.  You will become a slave to the very lamp you hold in your hands.  A genies vessel needs an inhabitant; a host.  You will spend the rest of your days and beyond as the genie of that lamp.” said the voice.

The servant gasped at the explanation.  It was a steep price, and indeed meant that she would never see the prince again.  However as she looked at him now, his breath deep and labored, she made up her mind quickly after.  She reached for the bracelets and pulled them onto her wrists swiftly.  The glowing aura surrounding them intensified as they clicked closed and locked in place suddenly.  The servant closed her eyes as she felt a surge of energy flowing into her body from them.  She opened them slowly after, her eyes glowing with magical power as she marveled at the feeling.  “Good.  Now hold out your hand. Concentrate on your beloved.” came the voice again.  She held her hand out and took a deep sigh.  She wanted this more than anything else in the world.  Her magic flowed and the injuries healed instantly.  His breathing slowed to a normal pace quickly after.  He was saved.  “Now think on where you want to send him.  And what he came for as well.” in coached her next.  The servant felt a small strain in her mind as parts of the treasure trove began to disappear and appear in the vault of the palace.

Amid the glowing items disappearing, the prince stirred lightly.  He opened his eyes slowly and beheld his childhood friend and servant standing there; arms outstretched, and treasure pieces disappearing around her.  A small gasp came from the girl as she turned to look at him.  Quickly she ran to him and held him close.  She looked into his eyes and planted a kiss on his surprised lips.  There were tears in her eyes as she heard the next words from the voice.  “It is time to say goodbye.”  She stepped back and held her hands out again toward the prince as she began to speak.  “I will always love you my prince.

The servant sank to her knees after this was done.  That was to be the final act of free will she would have.  At the very least she was able to tell him how she felt, and to do this for him made the sacrifice worth it.  “A hiss from the lamp brought her attention to it.  A trail of smoke was wafting from the tip of the lamp and pooling around her now.  She wondered what was happening before the smoke began to rise, covering her body swiftly.  “Do not be alarmed.  You are simply being outfitted in a more fitting manner.” assured the voice as her clothes began to unravel and disappear into the smoke.

Her common peasants clothing was replaced by garments of the finest silk cloth.  Golden gem laced jewelry adorned her beautiful body as the smoke pulled away and back into the lamp.  She floated up connected to the lamp by a thin trail of the smoke that replaced her legs.

"Much better.  Now you should rest.  You’ve used up a lot of your magical power very quickly.  You’ll need time to recuperate.  And time is one thing you have plenty of now.” said the voice comfortingly.  The servant nodded her agreement as she closed her eyes.  The trail of smoke connecting her to the lamp began to retract, being pulled back into the vessel.  “This is the life you have chosen.  You are now a genie, a wish granter.  You will serve under anyone even if their hearts are mired in their darkest hours.  Your individuality will fade as the years pass, and your memories will fade to ensure your insecurity.  You will obey whoever controls your vessel without fail.  That is the fate of the genie."

Time passes and begins to hold no meaning as days become weeks, and weeks became years...the next time a visitor enters the cavern a few hundred years have passed.  The servant is summoned from the lamp she inhabits and looks on the one holding it with a smile.  "I am the genie of the lamp.  How shall i serve you oh Master?" she says in a monotonous submissive tone.

But -- wasn't the lamp part of the treasure? Wouldn't it have gone to the prince as well?
